From the Workshop

Introducing the Custom Oil Can Mug: The Mug You Kept Asking Us For

For a long time, we couldn't help you. You'd write in asking for a mug of a specific oil can — the tin from the workshop wall, your Dad's, your Granddad's — and we had to say no. Here's the workaround we built with you: upload the photo, you choose one of our digital renders and we make the mug. Same brand, your rules, private commission. Illustrated in three moods so you can pick the one that brings the tin back the way you remember it.

For a long time, we did sell mugs featuring specific oil can designs. We bought the designs in good faith from suppliers who told us the artwork was properly licensed for resale. That's how the industry works when you're a small business — you trust your suppliers and assume the paperwork's in order.

Most of the brand holders we've since spoken to have been understanding. They can see that our customers are buying for emotional reasons — memory, nostalgia, a specific tin from a specific workshop — and that a hand-pressed mug from a small Sussex studio isn't in any way a threat to what they've built. Our quality and our service mean we're never a detriment to their brand. We're grateful to those who've taken that view.

But a handful of the biggest names in motor oil have felt differently, and that's entirely fair. Trademark law does what it does, and their marks are part of their business. We tried to work something out, offered to license properly. But at our size, we're a rounding error on their legal spreadsheet. Not worth the meeting.

Which was frustrating for everyone. You kept writing in, asking for those mugs. To remember. We had to keep saying no, and the requests kept coming.

Then a customer wrote in last week with an obvious question we should have thought of ourselves:

“If you can create mugs from photos of cars, surely you can create something from a photo of my own old oil can?”

That was Rolling Render they were referring to — our bespoke automotive portrait range, where you send us a photo of any car and we hand-illustrate it onto a mug. We hadn't thought to point the same tooling at tins on a workshop shelf. What followed was a lot of head-scratching, a lot of coding and a lot of stubborn iteration. But the moment we tried it properly, it worked.

What we built

Custom Oil Can Mug takes a photo of any oil can or tin — vintage or modern, yours or one you tracked down online — and turns it into three illustrated interpretations of the same design, wrapped on your choice of mug. You pick your favourite, choose the mug size, colour and material, and check out. The print file is ready the moment your payment goes through.

Because you supplied the source, it's a private commission for you personally — a completely unique mug made from your photo, not a piece of merchandise we're selling to the world. Which is the honest way of doing this.

It's the first product in a new range we're calling Sipfull Portraits.

How it works

Three steps.

1. Upload your photo. Any oil can — a vintage tin off the workshop wall, a modern bottle from the parts shelf, anything with a printed label and a strong layout. Don't have one to hand? Find your favourite design online and upload that. All we need is a clear photo of what you'd like on the mug.

2. Get three illustrated interpretations, in a minute. The system generates fresh, aged, and oil-stained versions of the same design. Same layout, same typography, same iconography — different atmosphere.

3. Pick your favourite and check out. No proof approval email, no waiting a week for us to reply. You picked. It prints.

The three flavours

Every upload comes back as three interpretations of the same design. What changes is the mood you associate with the tin.

  • Fresh reproduction — clean, brand-new-tin feel. Like it came off the shelf yesterday. For the tin that lives in memory the way it looked new.
  • Aged patina — decades-old character. Softer edges, warmer colours, honest wear. For the tin that spent years above a workbench but was always looked after.
  • Oil-stained — well-loved workshop finish. The one that lived on the bench for forty years and shows it. Drips, fingerprints, the lot.

Pick whichever brings the tin back the way you remember it. Not the way it looked in a catalogue.

Ready the moment you order

Custom Oil Can Mug is different from Rolling Render — our bespoke portrait range — in one important way: you approve the design at the point of ordering, not after a human proof round-trip.

That matters, so let us explain the trade-off honestly.

With Rolling Render, every proof is checked by Danni, in our Sussex studio before it prints — badges, stance, wheels, the specific character of your car. That's why it takes time to press, and it's worth it for a bespoke automotive portrait where the details are everything.

With Sipfull Portraits, there's no second pair of eyes on your specific mug before it prints. What we've done instead is teach the system to interpret your photo rather than reinvent it. The layout stays yours. Typography, badge shapes, iconography — all preserved from your source. What changes is the mood.

The upside: you get your mug faster, and it's priced a touch below Rolling Render because there's no manual step in the middle. The downside: no human eye on it before print. Which is why the three flavours matter — you're not blindly ordering, you're picking from three considered options against your source photo.

Faster. Same craft. Different promise.

The practical bits

  • 1-year fade guarantee. If the print fades within 12 months, free replacement.
  • Hand-pressed in England. Every mug, every time, in our Sussex studio.
  • Free UK shipping when you order two mugs or more. Tracked delivery from £1.99 otherwise.
  • Two generation rounds per hour. Compute isn't free — this is “get it right,” not “generate until you're bored.”
  • Personalised means non-returnable. You approve the design before it prints, so nothing's a surprise.
  • Only your photos. No scraping, no repurposing, no using anyone else's uploads. What you send us is between us and the printer.

What's Next

The Sipfull Portraits range is built to expand. Custom Oil Can Mug is where we started because it's what you kept asking for — but the tooling underneath doesn't care whether it's an oil can, a beer bottle, a wine label, a whisky bottle, or a bottle of gin. Anything with a strong printed layout can go through the same pipeline. And most of them already do:

  • Custom Beer Mug — the craft IPA, the classic lager, that rare Belgian from the back of the fridge. Fresh, ice-cold, or vintage brewery-print.
  • Custom Wine & Champagne Mug — the Bordeaux from the anniversary dinner, the Champagne from the engagement. Cellar-aged or candlelit, with a Champagne toggle built in.
  • Custom Gin & Whisky Mug — the single malt from the distillery visit, the botanical gin from the anniversary weekend. Fresh, backlit top-shelf, or vintage apothecary print.

Still on the list:

  • Custom Perfume Mug. The signature scent, the bottle on the dressing table, the one you always come back to.
  • Tea and coffee tins. The vintage kitchen equivalent. Tetley of the 1960s, PG Tips before the chimps, Camp Coffee for the nostalgic.
  • Workshop signs and tool tins. Old forecourt signage, garage display cards, Snap-on, Britool, Stanley of the 1970s.

If there's something specific you'd love to put on a mug that falls into this “label or layout with meaning” category, tell us. Every range we've launched at Sipfull started because someone asked.

Rolling Render (our bespoke portrait range) is also expanding — a motorbike-specific edition is next.

One Last Thing

Custom Oil Can Mug exists because a customer wrote in with an obvious question we hadn't thought to ask ourselves. We spent a lot of last year saying no to people who wanted specific tins on mugs, and it felt bad every time. Now we can say yes — on your terms, using your photo, made specifically for you.

We hope it does the thing it's supposed to do. Bring back the tin. On something you'll drink out of every day.

Send us a photo. See what we can do.
